Budget 2022-23: Announcements Galore, Vision Sparse

BJP government never seem to get over with the election fever (or fear). In his two hour maiden budget speech, Karnataka CM, Basavaraj Bommai probably made a thousand announcements but fell short of setting a vision and purpose for the state of Karnataka. Businesses and industries who were expecting a roadmap for recovery from the catastrophic pandemic did not find respite.  The lower income and middle class who faced a double edged sword of job loss and price inflation during the pandemic year had to bite a sugar coated bullet of no relief in taxes. The war crisis in Ukraine has already increased the oil prices and it will only further add to price inflation and burden of the common man. No provisions to put money back in the hands of people will cause more distress and not help economic growth. This budget has no vision to create jobs or entrepreneurial environment for small or medium scale setups. MSMEs are the highest job providers and the worst affected lot. While running a bu...

Implement these 6 thing before you waste our money again on potholes

(pc: indiatimes.com ) Hon. Mayor Gautam Jain and BBMP commissioner Anil Kumar have embarked on an humongous task of fixing all the potholes in Bengaluru by November 10th. While the intentions are appreciated we also want them to succeed. This action on war footing was necessary considering the situation of roads in Bengaluru. Looking at the pot hole history of BBMP, every year an emergency situation is created and crores of tax payers money goes down the drain in the name of fixing pot holes. It appears like a deja vu of 2017 October where the then mayor Smapat Raj had given a 15 days deadline to fill all potholes in Bengaluru. So what is being done and the way it is being done is just a waste of public money and these potholes will haunt us back in less than 3 weeks unless the Mayor gets the commissioner to implement these 6 things. 'You cannot fix what you cannot measure' applies aptly for the Bengaluru pot hole situation. Neither the officials nor the people...

6 Things BBMP commissioner should do to make dedicated bus lane a success

Bengaluru has the second-slowest commute speed in the country, with an average speed of 18.7 kmph during commute times, as per a national survey. Considering 45 mins commute time each way to work x 25 working days x 12 months this means we spend almost 1 month every year in traffic. The solution does not lie in road widening and building elevated flyovers, but in encouraging and incentivising public transport. Thanks to commissioner of BBMP for the initiative and chairman of BMTC to support the initiative we now have a dedicated bus lane between Central Silk board junction and Tin factory. It is clear that people and environmentally friendly initiatives can be implemented if government agencies work in tandem. This is a must required first step in boosting the public transport system and all concerned authorities and road users must whole heartedly support this initiative to make it a success. Care should be taken to ensure such initiatives really work and become a role mo...

Exit polls cannot determine the future Indians have chosen

Watching exit polls used to be fun but after seeing politics closely in past few years I have concluded that Exit polls are nothing but predictable scenarios that have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Exit polls will soon be forgotten because the actual results overpower the predictions and nobody has to explain why and why not. Worst case you have the standard excuse of sample size, margin of error etc. The media companies are not impartial anymore is a hard fact and people very well know their affiliations and also their tie-ups with so called neutral psephology companies. None the less an effort is made to collect and compile samples and then derive numbers. Curiosity attracts a lot of eyeballs and hence TRP. So the exit polls will exist as long as the elections do, but thanks to EC directive of not to air exit polls till the last vote is casted has kept them in abeyance from influencing the elections. That said many of my friends have asked me 'what do you think?' and...
